Before the invention of the printing press books were copied by monk scribes in their monasteries. Besides being scribes, they were also illuminators, archivists and librarians. A realistic window into this world was portrayed in Umberto Eco's beautiful work, The Name of the Rose. In this diorama set c.1250 in a Cistercian monastery, I wanted to represent a space infused with sacredness.Many thanks to my friend Luciano Leni for his masterful painting of the subjects,and their accessories, including the illuminated manuscripts.
